This week’s award goes to Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, for considering adding a piece of undeveloped riparian land to a nearby park.
I’m not going to get in the middle of the dispute over the foreclosure that brought this land into the hands of the County. There are lots of foreclosures these days, a lot of vacant land, vacant housing. I’m sure a parcel like this, subdivided and developed into luxury housing could really add to the county’s tax rolls. I’m sure it could also add a different dimension of foreclosure to the property’s tax records and to the general doldrum in the housing markets.
So say no to more housing no one can buy, phantom tax revenues, and hidden costs to school systems, public safety and sanitation systems. Say yes to saving something for the future, and the present—creating a resource for everyone.
