Heartlander of the Week: Mr. Fixit

This week’s award goes to the City of Milwaukee and LISC for improving established neighborhoods through repair rather than the bulldozer.

As Milwaukee has expanded Westward (Eastward puts you in knee-deep in Lake Michigan), the established core neighborhoods have grown a bit worn and shabby in places.  The foreclosure crisis didn’t help.  In bits and pieces, Milwaukee is bringing back neighborhoods through refurbishing existing buildings, rather than tearing down dozens of square blocks at a time in some kind of urban clear cut typical of traditional “redevelopment” schemes.

Creating jobs and teaching skills through remodel rather than new construction.   Now if they would only do the same in downtown . . . .
