Touch my (Anthony) Weiner

It was a year ago today that New York political Golden Boy Anthony Weiner resigned from Congress, having been exposed (by someone else this time) as an exhibitionist.  Thereby humiliating the United States of America, the institution of the Congress, his constituents, himself.

And his wife.  Huma Abedin.  The mother of his child.  The ultimate victim of Boys Will Be Boys.

Can anyone explain to me why misbehavior by grown men is—if not exactly accepted—anticipated, acknowledged, and shrugged off with a sense of Yet Another One Got Caught?

Seriously, a grown man sticks his phone down his pants and emails the pictures to teenage girls?  And he’s married?  To an attractive younger woman?  How is this even possible?  I guess I live in a bubble where middle class, enfranchised men are raised into grown ups instead of bred into monsters and sex perverts, living the toddler life, age of majority style.  (Do you ever wonder what their parents think?  Do their parents take any kind of responsibility?)  Did he need to be told, don’t do that?  Then why didn’t someone tell him?

I guess my (feminazi?) point is that behind many of these men is woman who is left mortified and humiliated.  A person who is devalued and denigrated by her husband’s childishness.  For the crime of choosing the wrong husband?

Recently, I saw the line go by:  Marry well, but realize marry well is not the same as marry for money.  Or power.

To Grownupsland, wherever you may find it.
