One of the challenges of gluten-free is enjoying restaurants without limiting oneself (and one’s dining companions) to a handful of choices.
While many restaurants today have an understanding of gluten-free and what has gluten and what does not, they sometimes miss opportunities on their own menu to provide options to the gluten-free diner. If you are eating at a restaurant, and you see, for instance, that the menu offers hummus or another dip with bread, and you also see that they tortilla chips and salads, go ahead and ask for your dip with tortilla chips and carrot sticks. If they offer desserts ala mode, but do not offer ice cream by itself, ask for a sundae or a dish of vanilla.
