As we are in the beginning stages of the holiday season, let us consider the challenges for the gluten-free diet and other food sensitivities and allergies. Buffets, potlucks, catered events, limited menus, hundreds of people eating the same thing as ordered by someone on a budget trying to please everyone.
What is someone with food sensitivities to do? Well, first, ask questions. Feel empowered to ask ahead of time who to talk to about ingredients in offered food items, ask if any alternatives might be available, and explain why you need assistance and some of the consequences. In theory, the food service provider should offer either adequate options that meet the needs of all attendees, or offer alternatives to attendees who cannot eat the standard items. The World is not a perfect place. If in doubt, and all else fails, attend the event anyway and just don’t eat. Eat beforehand, hang out, socialize, have a good time and in most cases, unless it is a seated dinner, no one will notice much.
And most important, have a good time. 🙂
