This week’s Heartlander is Nigeria, for quelling its Ebola outbreak quickly and with relatively low mortality. Only 19 cases, 7 deaths, no new cases since August 31. Technically, Nigeria won’t be considered Ebola free under World public health standards until two incubation periods pass with no new cases, that’s October 12. (It’s October 4 by now in Nigeria, so that’s 8 more days.)
Here’s hoping the U.S. does as well with Ebola incursion. Maybe Nigeria could send some technical assistance, although right now Guinea and Sierra Leone and Liberia probably need it more.
Hopefully, we will see an end to this frightening disease soon and possibly learn from the outbreak such that future epidemics will be more easily managed and curtailed.
